Self-awareness: Prominent skill for growth

Self-awareness: Prominent skill for growth

Self-awareness basically means to know how your thoughts, feelings and behavior works together. Being self-aware also means to be conscious about what your strengths and challenges are. However, being self-aware does not limit just to this but goes beyond knowing to understanding what your strengths and weaknesses are. Self-aware individuals know how they can best utilize their strengths and effort needed to turn weaknesses into an advantage in order to optimize growth.  Self-awareness is crucial for us to enhance social skills.

Knowing the importance of self-awareness to develop communication skills with clarity and intention, we have incorporated activities based on self-awareness in the curriculum of Year 3 of Hakuna Matata- Capacity Building. We conducted a workshop for the children of Hakuna Matata for this month on 19th of February. The workshop was based on the theme of social skills where we facilitated sessions that were rich in activity which can help children develop self-awareness skills. To help children understand themselves, we did an activity based on the CBT (Cognitive Behavior Theory) model, in which children examined their thought process and how those thoughts affect their emotion and behavior as a result. We also did a session on inner voice which helps children to recognize their inner voice and whether their inner voice was scathed by their negative thoughts.

By the end of the session, children reflected upon themselves and prepared a list of behavior they should modify to attain a growth mindset.  We are looking forward to see our children practicing learnt skills in their academia and daily life.
