Mithila by Danfe is NOW OPEN!

In a significant milestone for women’s socio-economic empowerment and cultural preservation, “Mithila by Danfe” officially opened its doors at Bhanu Chowk, Janakpur, on January 17, 2025. This initiative builds upon the ongoing efforts of SAATH, which has been actively fostering women’s socio-economic development in Janakpur since 2019 through skill-based training and entrepreneurship programs. The new outlet is an extension of Danfe, a social enterprise headquartered in Jwagal, Lalitpur, committed to empowering women and safeguarding Nepal’s rich culture and art.

'Mithila by Danfe' was inaugurated by Mr. Kishori Shah, Vice Mayor of Janakpur Sub Metropolitan City and attended by dignitaries from the Ministry of Sports and Social Welfare.

SAATH began its work in Dhanushadham, on the outskirts of Janakpur, in 2019, engaging 115 women and adolescent girls from the Musahar and Dom communities in tailoring and Mithila art training. By 2023, an additional 45 women were engaged through income-generating activities supported by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) Canada in Nepal. Building on this momentum, SAATH launched Mithila Art and Embroidery training in Janakpur in 2024, again with support from CFLI, focusing on preserving indigenous skills and promoting economic opportunities for marginalized communities. Danfe Works, as a partner, provides market access and employment opportunities for the trained participants of SAATH.

SAATH is offering Mithila Art and Embroidery Training to 15 women from Janakpur who will take part in the production once their training is complete.
|
|
|
The newly inaugurated shop serves as a platform for women and artists, aiming to preserve the rich artistic traditions of Mithila and empower women from marginalized communities. “Mithila by Danfe” provides a space to showcase and sell unique, handmade creations, promoting both cultural heritage and economic independence. The initiative is a critical step toward enabling financial self-reliance for women artisans while conserving the vibrant traditions of Mithila art.

Currently, the shop features over 25 distinct designs and more than 150 handmade products by 15 producers who are part of the training program, all reflecting the intricate and colorful diversity of Mithila art and embroidery. Supported by CFLI, the initiative aims to become self-sustaining by strengthening its local production unit and expanding market opportunities. With aspirations to cater to both national and international audiences, “Mithila by Danfe” seeks to bring Mithila art to a global platform.

Looking ahead, “Mithila by Danfe” envisions transitioning to shared ownership and operation by the trained participants, forming a core team of women artisans who will lead production and showcase Mithila’s artistic heritage.
