Flight of Danfe

Flight of Danfe

“Danfe” has successfully graduated total of 35 beneficiaries in 1.5 years and continue to welcome girls from various parts of Sindhupalchowk, Makwanpur and its neighboring districts. This project was initiated to train and also as a part of post-earthquake trauma relief comp for the girls in Sindhupalchowk. “Danfe” started training of 6 girls and till now it has taken total 36 girls under it’s wing.

With a desire to learn tailoring and open a tailoring shop in the future, Nirmala accepted the opportunity offered by SAATH. She is resident of Kavre living with her family involved in agriculture. After receiving ten months training at “Danfe” she believes it has helped boost her confidence and now she can express herself freely. She says, “at first it was nerve wrecking, coming into the new city without family”. But Danfe has become a family and now I have made many friends as well. Now I can do basic calculation. “Didi’s have always been kind and patient. It was easier to learn.” When asked about her favorite part of one year journey with Danfe, she says, “After I learned the basics of tailoring, every one of us made apron with our names on it. That was my favorite part. Other favorite part was the one-on-one counselling and drama session. I think I was happiest when I made a Kurthi myself.” Now that her training, plus two months internship at Danfe has come to an end, she wants to open her own tailoring shop in the future. She wants to practice tailoring at home and sew and sell some clothes from home. She believes that this training has helped her take first step towards independence and hopes that similar opportunity will be given to others as well.

Similary, Buddhamaya (24) has also finished her training from Danfe. Living in the Kavre with her family she always wanted to do something on her own to support her family. But with little opportunities in the village she was unable to fulfil her dream. One day she came to know about the tailoring program and immediately approached SAATH. Once shy Buddhamaya has become more confident and verbal. She says, “I was very scared about coming in a new environment but because of my family’s encouragement I took the step and now I am here. I had a difficult time opening up at first but now I can communicate confidently. I can make different types of clothes now.”
